Practical Uruguayan culture for newcomers
Mate, asado, football and the quiet social codes that help you connect with people in Uruguay.

Understanding a few cultural habits makes conversations easier — and gives you plenty to talk about.
Mate
You will see people carrying a thermos and gourd everywhere. If someone offers you mate, it is a gesture of friendship. Say gracias only when you have had enough — it means “no more for me”.
Asado
The weekend barbecue is a social ritual. Being invited is a great opportunity to practise long, relaxed conversation.
Pace and politeness
Life moves calmly. Greet people when you enter a shop, take time for small talk, and don't be surprised if dinner starts late.
Football
Football is close to a national passion. Asking someone about Nacional or Peñarol is a guaranteed conversation starter — just be ready for strong opinions.
