Montevideo for language learners
Neighbourhoods, rhythms and small daily rituals that make Montevideo a rewarding place to study Spanish.

Montevideo is a capital without the rush. It stretches along more than twenty kilometres of riverfront, and its neighbourhoods each have a distinct character.
The Rambla
The long waterfront promenade is where the city goes to walk, run, fish and share mate at sunset. It is also the easiest place to strike up a conversation.
Ciudad Vieja and Centro
The old town mixes colonial streets, art deco facades, museums and historic cafés. Mercado del Puerto is famous for its grills.
Weekly rhythms
Neighbourhood ferias (street markets) are perfect for practising numbers and food vocabulary. In February, Carnival and murga performances fill the city — one of the longest carnivals in the world.
