Learning Spanish before moving to Uruguay

How much Spanish you need before relocating to Uruguay, what to focus on first and how to combine online study with in-person classes.

You can move to Uruguay without fluent Spanish — many people do. But the first months are smoother when you can handle the basics yourself: renting, shopping, calling a plumber, talking to neighbours.

What to learn first

  • Numbers, dates, times and prices — you will use them every day.
  • Polite requests and questions: ¿Podría…?, ¿Me puede ayudar?
  • Vocabulary for housing, health appointments and banking.
  • Listening practice with Rioplatense speakers — the accent takes a little adjustment.

A sensible plan

Start with online lessons a few months before you move, focused on speaking and listening. Once you arrive, an intensive week or two builds confidence quickly, and flexible expat lessons keep you progressing afterwards.

A note on paperwork

Official procedures are in Spanish. Language lessons help you understand and communicate, but they are not legal or immigration advice — always check requirements with the relevant authorities or a qualified professional.
